Why does Medina County ground hold so much water?

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources describes the county as covered by glacial till, lake deposits and outwash, with the clay-rich Hayesville and Hiram tills forming the surface over much of it. FEMA's flood study adds that the upland till soils, about 88 percent of the county, generally have slow permeability.

The east side is rolling, with steep Sharon Sandstone ridges strongest in the northeast; the west is flatter and more clay. Both sides share wet springs.

In July 2003, 37 homes and 110 apartment units countywide had major flood damage, with the worst in Medina, Montville, Lafayette and Westfield Townships. About Medina County

Formed on paper in 1812 and organized in 1818, the county takes its name from Medina in Saudi Arabia. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area, bordered by Cuyahoga, Summit, Wayne, Ashland and Lorain counties.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the southern edge of the county's moraines roughly marks the divide between the Lake Erie and Ohio River basins. Rocky River and Black River water flows north to the lake, while River Styx, Chippewa Creek and Wolf Creek drain south toward the Tuscarawas.

The Medina County Park District, formed in 1965, manages about 6,353 acres, including restored wetlands at Granger and Chippewa Lake.

Medina County questions

Do I need a permit for basement waterproofing in a township?
Townships in Medina County handle zoning, while building permits come from the Medina County Building Department at 791 W. Smith Road (330-722-9220). Its regulations require approval before anyone alters or repairs a structure, and work started without a permit can draw an extra fee of up to double the permit cost. We confirm the permit for your address before work starts.
Who fixes a sewer backup in Medina County?
Start with who maintains the line. Under the county sanitary code, owners keep their own service connection clear and pay to snake or root-cut it, while the County repairs breaks in the part under the public right-of-way after the owner provides camera footage. Brunswick and Wadsworth publish their own contacts for city sewer problems; see the Brunswick and Wadsworth pages.
Is my Medina County home in a flood zone?
FEMA's Flood Insurance Study maps flood hazard areas along the Rocky River branches, Plum Creek, Mallet Creek, River Styx, Chippewa Creek and other streams. Township and village zoning forms, such as those in Brunswick Hills and Seville, ask whether a lot is in a flood plain district, so the zoning office can tell you.
How many cities, villages and townships are in Medina County?
Wikipedia counts four cities (Brunswick, Medina, Wadsworth and part of Rittman), seven villages and 17 townships, plus the census areas of Sharon Center and Valley City. Building permits for most of them come from the county.
Which way does water drain in Medina County?
Part of the county drains north to Lake Erie through the Rocky and Black rivers, and part drains south toward the Ohio River through River Styx, Chippewa Creek and Wolf Creek. The divide follows the southern edge of the county's glacial moraines.
Which area codes do Medina County phone numbers use?
Most of the county uses 330 with the 234 overlay. A few prefixes use 440, overlaid by 436 since 2024.
Does Medina County have soil maps for my property?
The USDA soil survey and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources both map the county's soils, which are mostly slow-draining till. They are a useful start, but a look at the actual backfill and water level at your house tells us more.
Where do I apply for a county building permit?
It is at 791 W. Smith Road in Medina, phone 330-722-9220, open weekdays from 8:00 to 4:30, with no permits issued after 4 p.m. Inspections must be requested by 3 p.m. the business day before.
Who handles stormwater rules in Medina County?
The County Engineer's Stormwater Department administers the county's stormwater and flood damage reduction regulations, reviewing plans and issuing stormwater permits for new development. Brunswick and Wadsworth run their own storm water programs.
Does Medina County offer help paying for basement waterproofing?
A county cost-share or rebate program for waterproofing or backwater valves did not turn up in the county's sanitary or building pages. Check with your city or village, and with your insurance agent about water backup coverage.
