Egress window sizes under Ohio's residential code
An egress window is an emergency escape and rescue opening: a window big enough, and low enough, for a person to climb out and a firefighter to climb in. The Residential Code of Ohio requires at least one in every sleeping room, including bedrooms in a basement, unless the house has an approved sprinkler system and other exits.
| Requirement (Residential Code of Ohio R310) | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Net clear opening | 5.7 sq ft (5 sq ft for grade-floor or below-grade openings) |
| Net clear height | 24 inches |
| Net clear width | 20 inches |
| Sill height above the floor | No more than 44 inches |
| Window well area | 9 sq ft, at least 36 inches out and 36 inches wide |
| Well deeper than 44 inches | Permanent ladder or steps |
The opening has to work from inside without keys or tools.
